Rajasthan has achieved a landmark in cancer care with the inauguration of the state’s first proton therapy centre at a private hospital in Jaipur. The centre, equipped with a single-room proton system capable of treating all solid tumours, is expected to significantly reduce the burden on cancer patients who previously had to travel to Mumbai, Chennai, or Delhi for this advanced treatment.

Proton therapy is a form of precision radiotherapy that targets tumours with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue, making it especially valuable for treating paediatric cancers, brain tumours, and cancers near critical structures.

Why Proton Therapy Matters

Unlike conventional radiation which passes through the body, protons deposit most of their energy directly at the tumour site — a property called the Bragg Peak. This precision significantly reduces side effects, particularly in children who are at high risk of radiation-related developmental damage.

Costs and Accessibility

The hospital has announced a special rate card for patients enrolled under Ayushman Bharat and Chiranjeevi Yojana, with treatment packages starting at ₹8 lakh — substantially lower than the ₹15–25 lakh charged at centres in other cities. Financial assistance is also available through the Chief Minister Relief Fund.
