SMS Hospital Adds 200 New Beds to Expand Capacity
Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, Jaipur — the largest government hospital in Rajasthan — has announced the addition of 200 new beds as part of a major expansion drive aimed at reducing the severe overcrowding that has plagued the institution for years.
The new beds are being added in the medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and gynaecology wards, with special focus on critical care units. The State Health Department has sanctioned ₹87 crore for the expansion, which is expected to be operational by the end of this financial year.
Why This Matters
SMS Hospital currently caters to over 7,000 OPD patients and 800 inpatients daily, putting tremendous pressure on available bed space. Patients from across Rajasthan — particularly from economically weaker sections — rely on SMS for free tertiary care under government schemes like Ayushman Bharat and Chiranjeevi Yojana.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. R.S. Sharma said the expansion would significantly improve the patient experience and allow the hospital to serve even more patients without compromising on care quality.
New ICU Facility
Among the additions is a state-of-the-art 40-bed medical ICU with cutting-edge monitoring equipment, ventilators, and dialysis support — a first for a government hospital in Rajasthan. The ICU will be staffed by dedicated intensivists round the clock.
The expansion also includes a new blood bank storage unit, additional OT tables, and a modern central sterilisation department to improve infection control standards.
