Tips to Stay Safe in Rajasthan’s Summer Heat: Doctors Advise
With temperatures crossing 45°C in several parts of Rajasthan, health authorities and doctors across the state are urging residents to take precautions against heat stroke — a potentially life-threatening condition that sends hundreds of patients to hospitals each summer.
Recognising Heat Stroke
Heat stroke occurs when the body’s temperature regulation fails. Warning signs include body temperature above 40°C, confusion or altered consciousness, rapid heartbeat, absence of sweating despite heat, and nausea. If you observe these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Doctor’s Advice
Dr. Ramesh Kumar Sharma of SMS Hospital advises: “Stay indoors between 11am and 4pm. If you must go outside, wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing and cover your head. Carry water and drink frequently even if not thirsty.”
Practical Tips
- Drink at least 3–4 litres of water daily
- Add ORS (oral rehydration salts), buttermilk, or lemon water to your routine
- Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and heavy meals in peak heat
- Never leave children or elderly in parked vehicles
- Check on elderly neighbours and family members daily
- Keep pets indoors and ensure they have access to water
When to Go to Hospital
If someone collapses in the heat, move them to a cool area immediately, apply cool water to their body, and call 108 without delay. Heat stroke is a medical emergency with a high fatality rate if not treated promptly.
The State Health Department has opened special heat stroke wards at all district hospitals and has kept additional ambulances on standby across Rajasthan’s 33 districts throughout the summer months.
